Motivation: Visiting with an old friend, Dan Ariely
What Motivates Us to Work?
or Why Even Try…
It’s been awhile since I absorbed any wisdom from Dan Ariely, and I’m glad I spent some time with him the other night on NetFlix.
Right away the topic resonates; “What makes us feel good about our work?” This happens to be a relevant topic in many of conversations I’ve been having lately. You may also know if you’re close to my thoughts and words on this website that it is NOT about the exchange of money for Products, Services or Information (in most cases) although it provides some way to “measure” appreciation or “Value” sometimes.
Why Do Mountain Climbers Climb Mountains?
Think about this — Why? As Dan points out, we don’t hear the stories of joy but pain, and challenge and “frostbite”
As Dan points out, “… mountain climbing as an example, … It suggests that we care about reaching the end, a peak. It suggests that we care about the fight, about the challenge. It suggests that there are all kinds of other things that motivate us to work or behave in all kinds of ways.”
